CAMERAS
Cameras have appeared in several formats over the years, however the two main formats today are 35mm and Advanced Photo System (APT). 35mm cameras are common and are continually supported by a vast range of manufacturers. The format offers high quality with the flexibility of different film speeds and film sensitivities. APT format gives a choice of picture size which can be chosen at the time of printing. Sizes are: Standard C type 2:3 prints or H type 9:16 wide HDTV type or 1:3 Pano prints. APT is user friendly and compact in size. It is slightly more expensive.

DIGITAL CAMERAS
There's no real format worry problem since all are designed to upload images into your PC. What matters is the quality of the image. If photographic quality is required, a camera capable of capturing approx 2 million pixels is required. However 1 million pixels and a good stylus printer can give good results and of course, you have the joy of being able to alter and manipulate the image to your desire, unbeatable.

CAMCORDERS
Camcorders are today, very popular and have been since the mid 80's, when the technologies to film good quality  video images with sound, became available. The camcorder is available in several formats, giving varying levels of reproduction quality - (resolution). The best quality is seen from the minidigital video format. This reproduces pictures of a similar level to a television channel, upto 500 lines of video resolution.. The analogue Hi8 and SVHSC are the next level down and gives pictures of a resolution approx.  two thirds of a TV channel quality or upto 400 lines of video. Lastly comes 8mm and VHSC formats giving approx. half the quality of a TV channel or 300 lines of resolution. Its important to note that the reproduced quality of the recorded image is dependent on the camera design and specification as well as what format it uses and there are some 8mm and VHSC cameras around that give excellent results.

While manufacturers recoup their costs in investments of the digital format, a digital camcorder is still comparatively expensive beside the older analog camcorder. The older products can sometimes be sold at cost, as manufacturers clamber to wind down old production lines and retool for new products.  The cost for the digital format will be expected to fall over the next several years, however, Analogue camcorder should remain very popular for the foreseeable future. There has never been a better time to own a camcorder or indeed have a failing one repaired!
